--US President Trump signs funding bill to end US government shutdown
MUMBAI – US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, as per US time, signed a short-term funding bill to end the government's longest-ever shutdown. Earlier in the day, the US House of Representatives had passed the bill on a 222 to 209 vote to restart disrupted food assistance, pay hundreds of thousands of federal workers, and revive the air-traffic control system.
"...I just want to say that the country has never been in better shape," the president said before signing the bill.
The package extends funding for the federal government through Jan. 30 and includes full-year funding for the Agriculture Department,
military construction and the legislative branch, Dow Jones reported. The bill also includes language guaranteeing the reversal of federal layoffs initiated by the Trump administration during the shutdown in a move to pressure Democrats, as well as a moratorium on future cuts. The package includes $203.5 million to boost security for lawmakers and an additional $28 million for the security of Supreme Court justices, the Associated Press reported.
Trump signed the bill a few hours before the government completed the 43rd day of shutdown, the longest federal government closure in the history of the country. The government has been shut since Oct. 1, a first since 2018, after lawmakers failed to agree on a measure to keep government operations running. The previous shutdown of the government, that had lasted for 34 days, was during Trump's first term of presidency. Around 800,000 workers has furloughed during that period.
Trump on Wednesday blamed the Democratic Party for the temporary shudown of the government. "There has never been a time when one or the other party didn't sign a continuation (of the government). It's just a continuation, not a big deal," Trump said. Yet the extremists in the other party insisted on creating the longest-ever shutdown in the country's history and they did it purely for political reasons, he said.
Trump also criticised the Affordable Care Act, informally known as Obamacare, which was signed into law by former president Barack Obama in 2010. "Obamacare was a disaster from day one...it was the biggest increase in any healthcare in any country." End
