MUMBAI – The domestic benchmark indices closed sharply higher Wednesday, on optimism about a potential trade deal between India and the US and the Bihar exit polls pointing at a win for the incumbent National Democratic Alliance government, analysts said. Prospects of an end to the US government shutdown also lifted market sentiment, they said.
The Nifty 50 closed at 25875.80 points, up 180.85 points or 0.7%. Analysts had said the 50-stock index would see more upside once it crosses 25750-25800 points. The index is now 400 points away from its record high. The Nifty 50 was also driven higher by gains in the index heavyweight Reliance Industries. The BSE Sensex ended the session at 84466.51 points, up 595.10 points or 0.7%. Both the indices closed higher for the third straight session. Broader market indices also gained sharply.
Investors likely bought shares of information technology companies after some media reports quoted US President Donald Trump as saying that the US does not have talent and needs foreign workers in certain sectors. This softening of stance comes after the US government hiked H-1B visa application by a whopping $100,000. Shares of Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, and HCL Technologies rose 1-3%. The Nifty IT index ended the session at 36855.40 points, up 2%.
Some brokerages said IT companies had reported better than expected earnings for the September quarter, margin growth, steady deal wins, and there were signs of demand recovery. Some analysts said there is valuation comfort in large-cap IT stocks while the mid-cap peers had premium valuations but can be justified by their growth potential.
Shares of automobile companies were also up. The Nifty Auto index ended 1.2% higher at 27485.15 points, backed by gains in Hero MotoCorp, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki India.
Tata Motors, which now houses commercial vehicles operations after the demerger of the company, ended the session at INR 329.45, up over 26% to the discovery price of INR 260.75. The stock Wednesday listed at INR 335. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, which houses its Jaguar Land Rover and other passenger vehicles business, closed more than 1% lower at INR 402.15.
Among Nifty 50 stocks, Tata Steel closed 1.3% lower ahead of its September quarter earnings. The company is expected to report strong earnings and operating profit numbers for the quarter, on the back of strong India business and better European operations, and narrowing losses in its Netherlands operations. Meanwhile, Asian Paints ended over 4% higher on the back of the company's better-than-expected September quarter earnings. The stock was largely flat before the results were announced. The company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 9.94 billion on a revenue of INR 85.31 billion.
Investors reacted to September quarter earnings of several companies. BSE rose 5% as the exchange's September quarter earnings were better than expected. Jefferies has maintained its 'hold' rating on the stock with a target price of INR 2,930. Revenue from BSE's options segment saw healthy growth, NDTV Profit reported quoting Jefferies as saying. It said clarity on norms for index options expiry is a key factor to monitor.
Biocon ended 5.4% higher after the company's upbeat earnings for the September quarter. While its top line grew in high teens and came in better than expected, its bottom line was marginally below estimates. The company aims to save INR 3 billion in interest cost annually with reduction in debt, its management said in a post-earnings call earlier in the day. The company also said its margins during the second half of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) will likely improve on fall in debt.
PI Industries ended over 5% lower after the company posted weak earnings for the September quarter on sharp decline in exports, subdued domestic demand, and price corrections in key products. The company retained the earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation margin guidance of 26-27% for FY26, its management said in the post-earnings call earlier. The company also said it is too early to guide for FY27.
Among Nifty 500 constituents, Kirloskar Oil Engines ended 12% higher and was the top gainer. The company's shares rose to their highest level in 11 months, after it reported an over 27% on-year rise in its bottom line and 30% on-year jump in its top line for the quarter. On the other hand, shares of Hindustan Copper closed 5.6% lower despite reporting year-on-year growth in both sales and net profit.
Billionbrains Garage Ventures, which made its debut on the exchanges, ended 31% higher at INR 131.33 on the National Stock Exchange. The stock rose over 34% to an intraday high of INR 134.4 after listing at INR 112 on NSE, a premium of 12% to its issue price of INR 100. About 523.83 million shares changed hands during the session.
