NEW DELHI – Financial Services Secretary M. Nagaraju Wednesday asked public sector banks to continue expanding credit to the agriculture sector and micro, small, and medium enterprises at a review meeting, an official part of the meeting said. "The ministry asked bigger PSU banks to continue lending to the priority sector," the official told Informist.
Nagaraju chaired a meeting with heads of PSU banks to review their performance, including financial inclusion and mobile applications, in the September quarter. Top executives of public sector banks, including State Bank of India Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty and Punjab National Bank Chief Executive Officer Ashok Chandra, attended the meeting.
In the quarter ended September, the 12 public sector banks reported a net profit of INR 495 billion, up 12% on year. The finance ministry typically reviews bank performance every quarter. The last such review was held on Aug. 20.
Nagaraju took stock of the banks' performance in financial inclusion schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Atal Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, Stand Up India, and PM Vishwakarma.
The banking secretary also launched loans for start-ups on the Jan Samarth Portal during the meeting, the official said. JanSamarth Portal is a unique digital platform that links 14 credit-linked government schemes on a single platform, enabling easy access for all beneficiaries and related stakeholders. End
