Blast near Red Fort metro station kills 8; red alert in Delhi, Mumbai

NEW DELHI – At least eight people were killed and several injured in a blast near the Red Fort metro station in the national capital, several news media outlets reported. Several cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, were put on high alert after the blast, according to news reports.
News agency Asian News International said 15 people were brought to the Lok Nayak Hospital. "Eight of them died before reaching the hospital. Three are seriously injured. One is in stable condition: Medical Superintendent, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital to ANI," the agency said on social media platform X.
According to the reports, the blast took place near Gate 1 of the metro station, which is close to the Chandni Chowk market and is usually crowded in the evening. The area has been cordoned off and several fire tenders were rushed to the spot. A team of National Security Guard commandos, the country's premier counter-terrorism force, is on its way to the site, as per some reports.
"We got information that there was a blast in a car near Chandni Chowk Metro Station. We responded immediately, and seven units were sent to the spot. At 1929 IST, the fire was brought under control. There is a possibility that there are casualties in this. All our teams are present at the spot," Deputy Chief Fire Officer A.K. Malik told ANI.
Sanjay Bhargava, president of the Chandni Chowk Traders' Association, told The Indian Express that the blast was "massive" with tremors felt as far as 900 metres away. "Buildings shook as if an earthquake had struck... there were bodies lying on the road, someone's arm in one place, someone's head in another," Bhargava told the newspaper. End
