AHMEDABAD - Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports in Apr-Oct rose 6.63% on year to 513.98 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. This was mainly because of the rise in crude oil and petroleum products cargo, which accounted for nearly one-third of the total cargo handled at all the major ports across country.

 

Crude oil and petroleum products cargoes rose 9.2% on year to 155.75 million tonnes in Apr-Oct. The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, rose 1.01% on year to 19.95 million tonnes.

 

Other than crude oil and other liquid cargo, container traffic increased 10.61% on year to 122.10 million tonnes. Raw fertiliser cargo rose 8.96% on year to 6.20 million tonnes in Apr-Oct. The volume of finished fertilisers imported in the first seven months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) surged 82.90% on year to 7.70 million tonnes. The cargo volume of thermal coal rose 0.79% on year to 76.03 million tonnes and Coking coal rose 8.16% on year to 36.06 million tonnes in Apr-Oct. Miscellaneous traffic was up 2.75% on year in Apr-Oct at 63.21 million tonnes.

 

Meanwhile, the volume of iron ore pellets fell 7.78% on year to 23.48 million tonnes.

 

Among the ports, Paradip Port handled the highest traffic in Apr-Oct at 88.97 million tonnes, followed closely by Deendayal port at 88.53 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 58.13 million tonnes.
