MUMBAI - Cement stocks are expected to rise in the near term as demand picks up, with the end of the monsoon season and a rebound in construction activity. However, companies are not expected to raise prices soon as demand remains muted-to-weak, though it is projected to recover in the coming months, an analyst tracking the sector said.

"Near-term price hikes (are) unlikely due to GST pass-through implementation; demand (is) expected to pick up as the festive season ends and rains ease," brokerage Prabhudas Lilladher said in its report Tuesday. The government cut the GST on cement to 18% from 28%, effective Sept. 22.

Due to weak demand, cement prices declined further in southern and eastern markets even after the government's goods and services tax cut, the broking firm said. Demand for cement in the northern parts of the country improved slightly, supported by government projects, while demand in western markets was stable. The demand in central regions remained weak, with recovery likely from November, the broking firm said.

Cement demand is expected to pick up as the rains gradually subside and as the festive season has concluded. "Increased government spending and post-festive construction activities are likely to support volumes," Prabhudas Lilladher said. Higher volumes in the seasonally strong December quarter are expected to partially offset pricing pressures as companies would try to raise prices on a rise in pet coke costs, it added.
