Water level in key reservoirs marginally down at 165.278 bcm as of Thu

MUMBAI – Water level in 161 key reservoirs in the country declined marginally from the previous week to 165.278 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 90.6% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. Water level was up 5.6% from a year ago and 18.7% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs fell slightly to 17.069 billion cubic metres, which is 86% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 62.3% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 17.777 billion cubic metres, nearly 82% of the total live storage capacity and higher than 75.6% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 36.325 billion cubic metres or 97.2% of the total live storage capacity of 50 reservoirs in the region, against 96.4% last year. Of the 50 reservoirs in the region, 38 were full or at 91-99% of the total live capacity. Three reservoirs in the western region had water levels below 40% of the storage capacity. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 44.690 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 92% of the total live storage capacity, compared to 88.4% a year ago. The water level in the southern region was at 49.417 billion cubic metres, around 90% of the total live storage capacity of 45 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was 88.7% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 161 reservoirs in the country, 156 reported more than 80% of normal storage and five reservoirs were at 80% or below of normal storage. Out of these five, one had storage upto 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 18.7 millimetres of rainfall, 93% above the normal of 9.7 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
