MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended in the red for the fourth time in the past five sessions as investors continued to draw profits at higher levels. Both indices rose in early trade, with the Nifty 50 rising to an intraday high of 25679.15 points before facing selling pressure and falling soon after.
The Nifty 50 fell to a three-week low, and eventually ended off lows at 25509.70 points, down 87.95 points or 0.3%. The BSE Sensex closed at 83311.01 points, down 148.14 points or 0.2%. While rise in shares of heavyweight Reliance Industries cushioned some of the fall, other heavyweights such as ICICI Bank, ITC, and Larsen & Toubro weighed on the indices. Broader market indices ended sharply down, with small-cap indices falling over 1%, as lacklustre earnings and muted outlooks for broader market companie triggered sell-off.
Asian Paints ended nearly 5% higher, after hitting a one-year high due to lower crude oil prices, instability at competitor Birla Opus Paints, and increased weightage in the MSCI Standard index. This higher weightage is expected to trigger foreign inflows of around $95 million, CNBC-TV18 reported Nuvama Alternative & Quantitative Research as saying.
Reliance Industries, another beneficiary of lower crude prices, ended nearly 2% higher and snapped a four-day losing streak. Interglobe Aviation closed 1% higher despite its losses widening in the reporting quarter after the IndiGo airline operator said it will step up growth efforts in the second half of the current financial year.
On the other hand, Grasim Industries plunged to a three-month low and closed down over 6?ter Rakshit Hargave, the chairman of its paints unit Birla Opus, quit to take over at Brittannia Industries. The stock was the worst hit in the 50-stock index. Adani Enterprises ended over 4% lower, falling for the second straight session after a sharp one-time gain just about helped the Adani group flagship company to report a profit in the September quarter.
Hindalco Industries closed over 5% lower after the company said that the fire at its US subsidiary Novelis' Oswego aluminium factory will have a short-term negative impact on the company's operating profit, starting from the December quarter. "...the fire accident at the Oswego plant is expected to result in a volume impact of 75 kilo tonnes, leading to a negative EBITDA impact of $100-150 million in H2FY26 (Oct-Mar) with the cash flow impact is projected at $550-650 million in H2FY26," ICICI Direct Research said in its report.
Bajaj Holdings & Investment ended nearly 9% higher and was the top gainer among Nifty 200 companies. While Bajaj Housing Finance reported on-year net profit growth in Jul-Sept post market hours, Bajaj Auto is expected to report a four-quarter high revenue growth and a six-quarter high profit growth on Friday. Bajaj Holdings is part of the promoter group of both companies. Pipe-maker Astral gained nearly 7?ter both its top line and bottom line for the September quarter beat the Street's estimates. One 97 Communications surged to a near three-year high despite a one-time expense hitting its bottom line for the reporting quarter after many brokerages were bullish on the company's growth story.
On the other hand, Blue Star fell 7% and was the worst hit on the Nifty 200 after muted earnings for the September quarter and a tepid outlook going ahead due to high inventories and regulatory changes. The stock extended its fall for the fifth straight session, declining 9% in that time. Indian Hotels Co. ended over 6% lower and hit a nine-month low after the company's consolidated net profit for the quarter nearly halved on year due to a one-time gain in the corresponding quarter. Both its bottom line and top line missed the Street's projections. Godrej Properties also ended over 4% lower after its revenue for the quarter missed estimates by a wide margin.
Among the Nifty 500 stocks, Redington ended 16% higher and was the top gainer on the Nifty 500 after consolidated net profit for the quarter grew 32% on year. The stock snapped a dreary run wherein it had fallen in 24 of the last 30 sessions, declining 17% in this period. CCL Products (India) also gained nearly 10?ter its net profit grew 36% on year. International Gemmological Institute (India) also gained 10% post a solid showing for the quarter.
On the other hand, BEML plunged nearly 10% and was the worst hit on the Nifty 500 after its sales for the September quarter fell on year. Netweb Technologies India also nosedived 9?ter its net profit and sales remained largely flat on year. Delhivery ended 9% lower after the logistics company slipped into losses in Jul-Sept compared to a profit year ago. Blue Jet Healthcare fell over 7%, declining for a second successive session after uninspiring results for the reporting quarter. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail fell 7?ter its lossed widened on year due to higher spending in advertising.
Shares of Orkla India made its debut on the bourses Thursday. The stock closed at INR 713.65 on the National Stock Exchange, down 5% from the listing price of INR 751.50. The stock had listed at a 3% premium to its issue price.
