India, Peru to hold next round of FTA negotiations Jan in New Delhi

NEW DELHI – India and Peru will hold the next round of negotiations for a free trade agreement in January in New Delhi, the commerce ministry said Thursday. The two sides concluded a round of negotiations Wednesday in Lima.
The discussions in Lima witnessed substantive progress across key chapters of the proposed agreement including trade in goods and services, rules of origin, technical barriers to trade, customs procedures, dispute settlement, and critical minerals, the commerce ministry said in a release. Both sides also agreed to hold intersessional meetings to address pending issues ahead of the next round of negotiations.
Peru is the first Latin American country to discuss a free trade agreement with India. India has preferential trade pacts with Chile and the MERCOSUR bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
India also wants to expand the preferential trade deals with Chile and the MERCOSUR bloc into a free trade agreement. New Delhi and Santiago have alredy initiiated negotiations for the expansion of the deal with both sides concluding the third round of talks just last week. India expects to soon begin negotiations for expansion of the deal with the MERCOSUR bloc as well.
India had Latin America had $35.21 billion of total trade in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). Indai exported goods worth $15.17 billion to the region. End
