MUMBAI – India received 18.7 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 93% above the normal of 9.7 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 5, the country received 119.8 millimetres of rainfall, 45% above the normal of 82.4 millimetres for the period, the data showed.
Of the four homogenous regions in the country, three recorded above-normal rainfall while one received below-normal showers, the data showed. East and northeast India recorded 37.8 millimetres of rainfall, a whopping 397% above normal. Of the seven subdivisions in the region, six recorded "large excess" rainfall and one recorded "excess" rainfall. The region was inundated with very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall due to the formation of multiple weather systems, which were remnants of cyclone Montha.
Remnants of the severe cyclone, which struck the eastern coast of the country last week, also led to above normal rainfall in central India. The presence of a depression over the Arabian Sea also brought abnormal post-monsoon showers to the western parts of the region. Central India received 20.6 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, which was 391% above the normal of 4.2 millimetres for the period.
In northwest India, the formation of a western disturbance continued the wet spell. The region received 7.3 millimetres of showers, 202% above normal, the data showed.
Rainfall in southern India was 44% below normal at 18 millimetres, according to the data. South peninsular India is the only region in the country with a normal rainfall higher than other regions during this time of the year as the northeast monsoon typically covers only this region.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, 20 recorded "large excess" rainfall in the week ended Wednesday. Rainfall was "excess" in four, "normal" in four, and "large deficient" in eight, according to the data. End
