Gold buys by central banks rise to 39 tn in Sept, highest in 2025, says WGC

MUMBAI – Gold purchases by central banks witnessed a steep rise in September, with net purchases reaching 39 tonnes during the month, the World Gold Council said, citing data from the International Monetary Funds and other public data sources. The purchases are up 79% on month, and also mark the highest net buying in a month in 2025 so far, the Council said. 

 

The Central Bank of Brazil was the largest buyer with gold purchases of 15 tonnes in September, the Council said. The National Bank of Kazakhstan and the Bank of Guatemala were also significant buyers for the month, with purchases of 8 tonnes and 6 tonnes, respectively. The Central Bank of Uzbekistan was the only bank to report sales, selling 4 tonnes of gold during the month.  

 

So far in 2025, central banks have purchased 200 tonnes of gold, which is slightly lower than 215 tonnes purchased in the same period last year, the Council said. The National Bank of Poland remains the largest reported net buyer with 67 tonnes of gold purchases in 2025 so far, followed by the National Bank of Kazakhstan with 40 tonnes of net purchases, and Azerbaijan with 38 tonnes of net purchases, it said.  End
