MUMBAI – Domestic airlines flew 12.64 million passengers in September, 3% lower than in the year-ago period, data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation Tuesday showed. Till September this year, domestic airlines had carried 123.37 million passengers, up 4% on year.
InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.'s IndiGo airline retained its top spot in the domestic market with a share of 64.3%, up marginally from 64.2% in August. The low-cost airline carried 8.13 million passengers in September, down over 2% from the previous month. Its passenger load factor was 81.5% in September, down from 84.6% in August.
The Air India group also saw a marginal rise in market share to 27.4% in September from 27.3% in August. The Tata group-owned carriers flew 3.47 million passengers in September, lower than the 3.54 million passengers it had carried in August. The Air India group's passenger load factor fell to 79.4% in September from 81.8% in the previous month. The Air India group includes Air India and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express.
Akasa Air's market share fell marginally to 5.3% in September from 5.4% in August. The ultra-low-cost airline flew only 665,000 passengers in September, against 703,000 passengers flown in August. Its passenger load factor, however, rose a little to 91.8% in September from 91.0% in August. The Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet Ltd. also saw a slight drop in its market share to 1.9% in September from 2.0% in August. The airline flew 245,000 passengers in September, down from 260,000 in August. Its passenger load factor was 84.6%, also down from 87.0% in August.
The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for September was 1.04%, according to the DGCA's report. The cancellation rate was 2.58% for SpiceJet, 0.62% for IndiGo, 0.48% for the Air India group, and 0.03% for Akasa Air. The top three reasons for flight cancellations in September were technical issues, weather-related concerns, and operational matters, according to the report.
During September, a total of 1,228 passenger complaints were received by scheduled domestic airlines. The number of complaints per 10,000 passengers carried for the month was about 0.97, as per the DGCA report. During the month, IndiGo continued to register the best on-time performance at 87.4%, followed by Akasa Air at 84.7%, the Air India group at 79.6%, and SpiceJet at 65.1%. The DGCA calculates on-time performance of scheduled domestic airlines at six metro airports--Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
Tuesday, shares of InterGlobe Aviation closed 1% lower at INR 5,637 on the National Stock Exchange. Shares of SpiceJet ended flat at INR 36.82 on BSE. End
