MUMBAI – The spread and intensity of post-monsoon rainfall over Mumbai and its suburbs is expected to decrease in the next few days and stop by mid-next week, according to private weather forecasting agency Skymet. The anticyclonic pattern over the central parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh is likely to strengthen from Thursday, which will bring in dry easterly winds across central Maharashtra, north Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, the weather agency said.

Though the southwest monsoon withdrew from the country on Oct. 10, the city has been receiving post-monsoon storms and showers on a regular basis since, the agency said. The presence of a depression--which has now weakened--over the Arabian Sea caused most of these showers. A low pressure area, which is a residual of the depression, has also become less marked over the same region, the agency said.

A cyclonic circulation, formed out of the leftover low pressure over the northeast Arabian Sea, persists in the same area, which continues to cause a wet spell over parts of Gujarat and the Konkan, including Mumbai, the weather agency said. This weather system is likely to keep bringing moist winds along the Konkan coast. Additionally, a weak north-south trough extends along the coasts of Kerala to south Gujarat. The combination of these two weather systems will trigger scattered rainfall along the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, in the next two to three days, the agency said.

The weather agency expects pleasant winter conditions to set in over the city next week. "Typical fair weather conditions of November, with clear skies, pleasant winter chill, and murky mornings--more so for the northern plains--will set the benchmark for the transition to the seasonal changeover," the agency said.  End
