MUMBAI – The area sown under rabi crops across India reached 7.58 million hectares as of Friday, up 15% on year from 6.59 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, data from the agriculture ministry showed. Though excessive rainfall during the southwest monsoon delayed the sowing of rabi crops in some states, it has boosted sowing in other states. Above-normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon, as well as the ongoing northeast monsoon, has replenished water reservoirs and made soil conditions favourable for a rapid progression of rabi crop sowing.

During Jun-Sept, the country has received 937.2 millimetres of rainfall, 8% above normal for the period, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 3, India recorded 117.8 millimetres of rainfall, 48% above normal for the period.

The acreage under wheat, the major rabi crop, was up nearly 47% on year at 334,000 hectares, the data showed. Wheat is only grown in the rabi season in India. The acreage under rabi paddy was 371,000 hectares, down nearly 18% from the previous year. The area under coarse cereals, promoted as "Shri Anna" by the government, was up nearly 9% on year at 562,000 hectares, the data showed. The area sown under jowar was 270,000 hectares, down nearly 3% on year, while maize acreage was down more than 3% at 210,000 hectares.

The total area sown under all pulses so far was 2.08 million hectares, up nearly 26% on year from 1.65 million hectares sown last year. Among pulses, the acreage of chana was 1.49 million hectares, up nearly 23% on year from 1.22 hectares sown last year. Chana is the largest legume, both in terms of acreage and production, sown during the rabi season. The area sown under masur was 256,000 hectares, up more than 35% on year from 189,000 hectares sown last year.

The area under oilseeds was 4.23 million hectares, up over 13% on year from 3.74 million hectares sown last year. Mustard acreage was 4.17 million hectares, up nearly 14% on year, while the area sown under groundnut was 19,000 hectares, down more than 32% on year.

The following table details the sowing of key rabi crops, in hectares, compared with year-ago levels, and the year-on-year change in percentage terms as of Friday:
