NEW DELHI – Telecommunications major Bharti Airtel Ltd. Monday posted better-than-expected results for the September quarter as total expenses of the company grew slower than the top line, both sequentially as well as on a year-on-year basis. Further, the company recorded a jump in its average revenue per user as well smartphone data customer acquisition during the reporting quarter.
The company's bottom line returned to growth trajectory sequentially in Jul-Sept after two consecutive quarters of decline while its top line growth was higher than the trailing quarter.
Bharti Airtel's consoloidated net profit for the September quarter rose 14% sequentially to INR 67.92 billion, much higher than the consensus estimate of INR 64.61 billion. On a year-on-year basis, its bottom line jumped 89% .
The company's consolidated revenue for the reporting quarter rose 5% sequentially and almost 26% on year to INR 521.45 billion. Analysts had expected the company to post a top line of INR 505.36 billion.
In Jul-Sept, Bharti Airtel's smartphone data customer count increased by 5.1 million from the previous quarter and by 22.2 million from the year-ago quarter. Its average revenue per user increased to INR 256 in the reporting quarter from INR 233 in the year-ago quarter and INR 250 in the trailing quarter. Mobile data consumption increased to 28.3 gigabyte per month per customer during the September quarter, up 26.6% on year and 5.3% on quarter.
The company's overall customer base increased 3% sequentially and 10.7% on year to 623.55 million in the September quarter. In India, the customer base grew 3.1% on quarter and 10.6% on year to 449.74 million while customers of the company's Africa business grew 2.6% on quarter and 11% on year to 173.82 million in Jul-Sept.
Bharti Airtel's total expenses in Jul-Sept grew 4% on quarter and 15% on year to INR 225.84 billion. This was led by a 26% year-on-year growth in network operating expenses of the company at INR 101.18 billion, while expenses tied to licence fee and spectrum charges grew 10% on year to INR 38.25 billion for the quarter. Bharti Airtel's sales and marketing expenses in the September quarter grew 10% on year to INR 31.82 billion and its other expenses grew nearly 17% to INR 22.80 billion.
The company's consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation for the reporting quarter came in at INR 299.19 billion, up 36% on year and 6.2% sequentially. Its consolidated EBITDA margin for the quarter expanded 50 basis points sequentially to 57.4%.
Bharti Airtel's consolidated earnings before interest and tax, or EBIT, for Jul-Sept stood at INR 166.69 billion, up 51.6% on year. Its consolidated EBIT margin for the quarter improved 40 bps sequentially to 32%.
SEGMENTAL PERFORMANCE
Bharti Airtel's India business contributed INR 386.90 billion to the company's overall top line in the September quarter, up 22.6% on year. This segment reported INR 232.04 billion in EBITDA for the quarter, up 34.2% on year. The segment's EBITDA margin improved 50 bps sequentially in Jul-Sept to 60%. Meanwhile, EBIT of the segment grew 54.4% on year to INR 121.92 billion in the reporting quarter and the EBIT margin expanded 10 bps sequentially to 31.5%.
Revenue from the mobile services India segment was INR 281.17 billion in the September quarter, up 2.6% on quarter and 13.2% on year. Bharti Airtel incurred INR 96.43 billion in capital expenditure for its India business in the September quarter.
The company incurred INR 113.62 billion of capital expenditure for the September quarter, up from INR 83.07 billion a quarter ago. For the Africa business, Bharti Airtel incurred a capex of 17.19 billion in Jul-Sept. Revenue of the company's Africa business grew 24.2% on year in constant currency terms for the reporting quarter.
The passive infrastructure business of the company recorded 10% year-on-year growth in revenue for the September quarter at INR 81.88 billion. The EBITDA of this segment fell 6% on year to INR 46.95 billion in Jul-Sept. "Passive Infrastructure Services revenue grew 1.6% QoQ (quarter-on-quarter), led by continued new site roll outs and tenancy additions in Q2'26 (Jul-Sept)," Bharti Airtel said in a press release.
Airtel Business, the business-to-business arm of the company, saw a 7% year-on-year decline in its revenue during the September quarter at INR 52.76 billion. However, EBITDA of this segment rose 9% on year to INR 21.94 billion in the reporting quarter.
In the first half of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the consolidated net profit of the telecom giant grew to INR 127.40 billion, up from INR 77.53 billion a year ago. Its consolidated revenue rose to INR 1.02 trillion from INR 799.80 billion in Apr-Sept.
As of Sept. 30, the company reported a net debt of INR 1.95 trillion, up from INR 1.92 trillion a quarter ago.
On Monday, shares of Bharti Airtel ended almost 1% higher at INR 2,074 on the National Stock Exchange. The company announced its September quarter earnings post market hours. End
