NEW DELHI – NPCI International Payments Ltd., international subsidiary of National Payments Corp. of India, has signed a deal with Razorpay Curlec to enable Unified Payments Interface transactions for Indian tourists visiting Malaysia, allowing seamless digital payments across Malaysian merchants. This integration will allow Indian travellers visiting Malaysia to make instant and secure payments to local merchants accepting payments directly via Razorpay Curlec's platform using their preferred Unified Payments Interface-enabled applications.

"As travel between India and Malaysia continues to rise, there is a growing scope to make cross-border transactions more seamless, reducing dependence on cash, minimising foreign exchange costs, and improving payment acceptance for travellers and businesses alike," NPCI International Payments said in a press release Monday. "By connecting to UPI, Malaysian businesses can tap into a rapidly growing base of Indian travellers who trust the ease of UPI payments--unlocking new revenue streams with minimal friction while benefiting from local settlement and compliance."

Commenting on the development, Ritesh Shukla, managing director and chief executive officer of NPCI International Payments, said the company is focused on expanding the Unified Payments Interface's global presence to make digital payments more accessible and seamless for Indians travelling abroad. "This collaboration reflects our ongoing commitment to building a globally connected, inclusive, and interoperable payments ecosystem," Shukla said.

Cross-border transactions on the Unified Payments Interface began in the financial year 2021-22 (Apr-Mar) when Singapore linked its fast payment system, PayNow, with it. In the current fiscal till July, over 600,000 cross-border transactions took place using the Unified Payments Interface, with a total value of INR 1.69 billion.

In 2024, the finance ministry had said in a report that NPCI International Payments had reached out to more than 80 countries to link the Unified Payments Interface with their own fast payment systems. NPCI has also executed agreements with more than 20 payment partners covering over 30 countries, the ministry had said. India has tied up with several countries to enable Unified Payments Interface transactions in them. These countries include France, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Japan.  End
