MUMBAI – A year-on-year decline in the despatches of motorcycles overshadowed the continued strength in the wholesale sales of Hero MotoCorp. Ltd.'s scooters in October, according to the company's exchange filing Monday. The company reaped the benefits of the festive fervour topped by a cut in goods and services tax, which came into effect Sept. 22, as its retail registrations hit a record high of 994,690 units last month. Hero MotoCorp's monthly scooter sales hit a five-year high.
Hero MotoCorp sold 635,808 two-wheelers to dealerships in October, down 6% on year. This is the first year-on-year contraction in sales registered by the company since April, when it had fallen 43%. Of these 635,808 units, the company sold 604,829 in India, down 8% on year. Exports, which form only 5% of the company's overall sales, grew 43% on year to 30,979 units.
The company sold 570,753 motorcycles in October, down 10% on year. Motorcycles account for 90% of the company's overall two-wheeler sales. Despite the festive boost and tax cut, Hero MotoCorp sold fewer motorcycles in October than it did even in September, when it had despatched 626,217 units. "With continued festive enthusiasm and improved consumer confidence, Hero MotoCorp expects a sustained retail trajectory in the coming months," the company said in a press release.
Hero MotoCorp sold 65,055 scooters in October, the highest since October 2020 when it had sold 74,350 units. Hero MotoCorp's scooter sales grew 50% on year – its sixth consecutive month of double-digit sales growth.
APR-OCT SALES
The company sold 3.69 million two-wheelers in Apr-Oct, down 1% from the corresponding period a year ago. Of this, domestic sales stood at 3.49 million units, down just over 3% on year. Export sales increased to 206,976 units, up 52% on year.
Motorcycle despatches in this period fell to 3.37 million units, down 3% on year. In contrast, scooter sales shone again, as despatches grew 33% on year in Apr-Oct to 320,561 units.
For the quarter ended June, Hero MotoCorp had reported a net profit of INR 11.26 billion on a revenue of INR 95.79 billion. On Monday, shares of the company closed with a slight negative bias at INR 5,539 on the National Stock Exchange. End
