MUMBAI – Benchmark indices bounced back Friday, after ending lower for the previous two sessions. Both indices gathered steam after choppy trade earlier in the day and managed to sustain the gains thoughout the afternoon and early evening trading sessions. Analysts had expected the indices to recover, with the 25600-25750 zone being seen as a good entry point into the Nifty 50 for investors.
The Nifty 50 ended at 25763.35 points, up 41.25 points or 0.2%, and the BSE Sensex closed at 83978.49 points, up 39.78 points or 0.1%, on Monday. Broader market indices saw robust gains and outperformed their benchmark peers. Shriram Finance ended over 6% higher, hitting an all-time high and ending as the top gainer in the Nifty 50 after its net profit for the September quarter beat analysts' expectations, with brokerages also noting that its net interest margin is expected to improve going ahead and steady credit costs will also be a key driver in the company's growth.
Tata Consumer Products gained after both its net profit and sales for the quarter beat the Street's estimates. The stock, which traded slightly lower ahead of earnings, ended the day nealy 3% higher. Mahindra & Mahindra ended nearly 2% higher after the automaker's domestic sport utility vehicles wholesale sales in October hit a record high. The company had also launched new editions of its flagship cars Thar, Bolero and Bolero Neo.
On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki India fell over 3% to a near two-month low after Jefferies downgraded the stock to 'hold' from 'buy' due to concerns regarding falling market share. The international brokerage also said that the company missed second-quarter profit estimates due to higher costs, Moneycontrol reported. While passenger vehicle demand is positive and exports are doing well, it is concerned about the company's market share in the passenger vehicles segment, the report said.
Most sectoral indices gained during the session, with Nifty Realty ending 2.2% higher. The Phoenix Mills gained nearly 4?ter its second-quarter profit and revenue beat analysts' expectations. DLF ended 3% higher. The Gurugram-based real estate major had after market hours Thursday reported a net profit that had beat the Street's view, but the top line had fallen short of expectations. The stock had ended nearly 3% lower on Friday.
The Nifty PSU Bank ended 2% higher on reports that the government is preparing a new plan to merge certain public sector banks and privatise smaller lenders. Indian Bank, Canara Bank, and Punjab & Sind Bank gained 2-3%. Bank of Baroda ended nearly 5% higher after the bank's net profit for Jul-Sept beat analysts' estimates by a wide margin despite declining on year due to a high base.
Among other major movers, Vodafone Idea's shares surged sharply midway through the session after the Supreme Court modified its Oct. 27 order and allowed the government "to comprehensively reassess and reconcile all adjusted gross revenue dues" of the telecom company till FY17, including penalty and interests. Earlier, the top court had in its order allowed the government to reconsider only the additional adjusted gross revenue demand for the period up to FY17. The stock had ended 7% lower on Thursday after the Supreme Court's written order on the company's plea to quash the additional adjusted gross revenue led to some confusion in the market. The stock ended over 9% higher Monday.
Godrej Consumer Products ended over 5% higher despite reporting weak earnings for the second quarter as many brokerages expect the company's growth to outpace peers in the near term. Patanjali Foods, however, ended 4% lower and had hit an over three-month low in early trade after the company said it sees pricing pressure on its business persisting because of tightening global vegetable oil supplies and other geopolitical factors.
Among stocks in the Nifty 500, Wockhardt ended over 10% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 500. Gravita India gained over 8% higher after its consolidated net profit rose 33% on year in the September quarter. Schaeffler India rose 6?ter its net profit for the reporting quarter rose 24% on year.
On the other hand, both Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure ended around 5% lower each after the Enforcement Directorate raided the assets of Anil Ambani, chairman and managing director of the Reliance Group. The ED has attached assets worth INR 30 billion of Ambani in connection with its money laundering probe against the group, reports said. Netweb Technologies India ended 6% lower and was the worst hit in the Nifty 500 after its revenue and net profit for the quarter were broadly flat on a sequential basis. Zensar Technologies fell over 5?ter its net profit for the September quarter was broadly unchanged on quarter.
