MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. reported its highest ever monthly total sales at 220,894 units in October, up 16.5% on month and 7% on year, the company said in a release Saturday. The automaker's sales in the compact segment rose 13.9% on month and 15.5% on year to 76,143 units. The company's sales of vans and utility vehicles also grew at a strong pace in October.
This is the first full-month data on sales by the country's largest carmaker after the government overhauled its indirect tax regime by collapsing four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% into two slabs of 5% and 18?fective Sept. 22. The management had said Friday in a post-earnings conference call that festival season retail sales were up 90% since the new GST rates kicked in. The company's domestic sales rose 9.4% on year and 28.6% on month to 189,590 in October.
Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 1.30 million units in Apr-Oct, up 2.3% on year. While its domestic sales for the first seven months were still down 2.5% on year at 1.06 million units, exports have risen by nearly a third in that period to 238,783 units. However, exports in October fell 5.6% on year to 31,304 units, and were sharply down from September's record of 42,204 units.
The strong pace of sales of compact vehicles – Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and Wagon R – led to the overall rise in passenger car sales. The company's passenger car sales rose 10.2% on year in October to 85,210 units, up 15.0% from September. Of these, sales of mini cars – Alto and S-Presso – fell over 15% on year but rose 26% on month to 9,067 units.
Total domestic passenger car sales were 176,318 units in October, up 10.5% on year and 33% from the previous month. Sales of utility vehicles, such as Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victors, and XL6, broke a four-month streak of on-year fall and grew 9.8% on year to 77,571 units. On a monthly basis, the sales in the segment rose nearly 60%. The festival season and its related consumption arrived two weeks earlier than in 2024 and continued almost entirely in October this year.
In October, Maruti sold 13,537 units of Eeco, its only van model, up over 16% on year and jumping 35% month-on-month. The company's only light commercial vehicle, Super Carry, saw a sale of 4,357 units in October, up 23.1% on year and surging 51% from September.
On Friday, Maruti Suzuki reported a net profit of INR 32.93 billion for the September quarter, up 7.3% on year, on a revenue of INR 421.01 billion. On Friday, its shares closed at INR 16,186.00 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.1% from the previous close. End
