Heavy rains due to Cyclone Montha hit urad, cotton, paddy crops in Andhra

MUMBAI – Heavy rains due to Cyclone Montha, which formed over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, has affected key kharif crops such as paddy, urad, and cotton in Andhra Pradesh. Amongst all kharif crops, the area under urad and cotton were the most affected, according to the preliminary damage estimate.
The total crop area damaged in Andhra Pradesh due to Cyclone Montha has been estimated at 138,391 hectares, according to data shared by the state government. The damaged area accounts for over 5% of the total acreage under kharif crops in the state. According to the state's acreage report, the area under kharif crops as of Sept. 26 was 2.69 million hectares.
Data showed that 7,564 hectares, or 32% of the total acreage under urad, has been damaged due to the rains. The acreage under urad, one of the key pulses grown in the state after tur, was 24,000 hectares as of Sept. 26. The data showed 39,008 hectares, or 9% of the total area under cotton, was damaged due to the cyclone. The damage to the paddy crop was nearly 86,159 hectares, 6% of its total area sown. Paddy is the largest kharif crop in the state.
On Monday, the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and intensified into the cyclonic storm 'Montha' and further into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday. Under the influence of this cyclone, parts of south India recorded extremely heavy showers during the week.
According to the India Meteorological Department, south peninsula recorded a whopping 136?ove-normal rainfall at 75.6 millimetres during the week ended Wednesday. Coastal Andhra Pradesh recorded 174.2 millimetres of rainfall, which is 363?ove normal, while precipitation over Rayalaseema was 290?ove normal at 102.8 millimetres. End
