NEW DELHI – The government's gross tax mop-up in the first half of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rose 2.8% year-on-year to INR 18.654 trillion with collections picking up pace in September, data released Friday by the Controller General of Accounts showed. Income tax continued to be the top contributor to the Centre's coffers in Apr-Sept and collections grew sharply in September, thanks to extension of the last date to file tax returns to Sept. 15, against Jul. 31 last year.

Income tax collections rose 4.7% on year in Apr-Sept to INR 5.910 trillion. Income tax collections in September rose 33.7% on year to INR 1.500 trillion. Thanks to the sharp rise in income tax collections, gross tax revenue was up 8.4% on year at INR 5.214 trillion.

Corporate tax collections remained tepid in September, up just 0.2% on year at INR 2.373 trillion, bringing the total collections in the first half of FY26 to INR 4.666 trillion, up 1.1% on year. On a month-on-month basis, income tax collections were up 75% in September while corporate tax collections rose nearly eight-fold owing to advanced taxes which are paid in instalments in June, September, December and March.

The Budget has projected total tax collections in FY26 at INR 42.702 trillion, up 10.8% from the revised estimate for last year. Data for FY25 showed that the government missed the revised aim by INR 582 billion.

The growth in tax collections during the first six months, albeit muted, was aided by a 5.8% rise in central goods and services tax collections at INR 4.667 trillion. In September, central GST collections grew 8.9% on year to INR 762.34 billion. September central GST collections partly reflect the impact of rationalisation of GST rates, which came into effect from Sept. 22. The Budget has projected India's central GST collections to grow 11.3% in FY26

The government's net tax collections during the first half of FY26 were down 2.8% to INR 12.294 trillion, with September's net tax rising 7.1% on year to INR 4.190 trillion. The fall in net taxes was also due to a 16.0% rise in the Centre's devolution to states during the period. The government transferred INR 6.318 trillion to states in Apr-Sept. The total transfer to states so far translates to over 44% of the full year's aim of INR 14.224 trillion. The Budget has projected India's net tax collections at INR 28.374 trillion in FY26.

On the indirect tax front, customs and excise duty showed divergent performance with collections falling for the former and growing for the latter during Apr-Sept. The Budget has projected customs and excise collections to grow 2.1% and 3.9%, respectively, in FY26. Customs duty collections were down 5.2% on year in Apr-Sept at INR 1.071 trillion, while excise duty collections were up 8.1% on year at INR 1.389 trillion.
