MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department expects a low-pressure area to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours, under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation lying over the south Myanmar coast and adjoining north Andaman Sea extending up to middle tropospheric levels.

The well-marked low pressure area over eastern Vidarbha and adjoining Chhattisgarh on Thursday is likely to move north-northeastwards across Bihar and weaken into a low pressure area in the next 12 hours, the weather department said Friday. Under the influence of this low pressure area, extremely heavy rainfall over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Friday, the weather bureau said while issuing a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The depression over the east-central Arabian Sea Thursday has moved north-northeastwards and is likely to move in the same direction towards the Gujarat coast across the east-central Arabian Sea in the next 24 hours and weaken gradually thereafter, the weather department said. Under this weather system, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of western India till Saturday. End
