MUMBAI – Water levels in reservoirs across the country saw only a marginal rise from last week as the intensity of rainfall petered out in most regions. The sowing of rabi crops also commenced in many parts of the country, which is likely to have used up some of the water stored. The water level in 161 reservoirs across the country was 165.782 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, slightly higher than 165.576 billion cubic metres the previous week, according to data from the Central Water Commission.
As of Thursday, water levels in 51 of the 161 reservoirs in the country were at full capacity, rising by only one reservoir from last week. On the other hand, the number of reservoirs with 40% and below water levels increased by two to 15, the data showed. In the week ended Oct. 24, reservoirs with full capacity in the country were 50, while 13 had 40% and below water levels.
Water levels stood at 90.9% of the total live storage capacity of 182.479 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, up 4.4% from a year ago. The water level in the reservoirs as of Thursday was nearly 16.3% higher than the 10-year average.
Reservoirs in the central, western, and southern regions of the country witnessed a slight rise in water levels from the previous week, while northern and eastern regions recorded a marginal drop from last week, the data showed.
In the southern region, the water level was at 49.831 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is nearly 91% of the total capacity of the 45 reservoirs in the region. The storage was slightly higher than the year-ago period at 90%. This rise in water levels was due to 75.6 millimetres or 136?ove normal rainfall over the region during the week ended Wednesday, mainly due to the formation of cyclone Montha, which brought very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to most parts of the region. Southern India includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.
The water level in reservoirs in the central region was 44.674 billion cubic metres, which accounts for nearly 92% of the total live storage capacity, surpassing 89% a year ago. This region includes Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
In the western region, reservoirs held 36.404 billion cubic metres, which is 97.5% of the total live storage capacity, up slightly from nearly 97% from the year-ago period. The western region comprises Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Water levels in reservoirs of the northern region was 17.205 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, or nearly 87% of the total live storage capacity, higher than nearly 65% a year ago. Last week, reservoirs in the region held 17.265 billion cubic metres of water. The northern region includes Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
The water level in key reservoirs in eastern India was 17.667 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, 81% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 78.2% a year ago. In the previous week, the water level in reservoirs in the region was 18.176 billion cubic metres. The eastern region includes Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, and West Bengal.
During the week ended Wednesday, India received 29.6 millimetres of rainfall, 158?ove the normal of 11.5 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. As of Oct. 25, the area under rabi crops was 2.75 million hectares, up 2% on year from 2.69 million hectares last year, data from the agriculture department showed. End
