--Achin Gupta to replace Umang Vohra as Cipla MD, global CEO from Apr 1

MUMBAI – Pharmaceutical major Cipla Ltd. Thursday said Achin Gupta will take over as the company's managing director and global chief executive officer from Apr. 1 after Umang Vohra, whose term ends on Mar. 31, expressed his intention to not seek reappointment. Gupta is currently the company's global chief operating officer. He will helm the company for five years starting Apr. 1, Cipla said in an exchange filing.

Shares of the company fell nearly 5% following the disclosure of change in leadership, but soon pared some of the losses. At 1414 IST, the shares were at INR 1,545.90 on the National Stock Exchange, down 2.2%.

Vohra has held his current position since 2016, having joined the company in 2015 as its global chief financial and strategy officer. "My ten years at Cipla have been filled with pride in what we've built together. Guided by our purpose of caring for life, I have had the privilege of working with teams who consistently put patients first and drove innovation across the business," Vohra said in a statement. "As I prepare to hand over the reins, I'm confident that Achin Gupta will lead Cipla forward with vision and purpose," he added.

Cipla's board Thursday approved the appointment of Gupta as the managing director and global chief executive officer designate from Jan. 1. Gupta has been serving as Cipla's global chief operating officer since February, having joined the company in 2021 as the chief executive officer of its "One India" business. He currently oversees the company's commercial markets, active pharmaceutical industries division, manufacturing and supply chain operations.

"Over the past few years, I've had the privilege of working closely with teams across the organisation and witnessing firsthand the passion, resilience, and commitment that define Cipla," Gupta said.

Earlier in the day, Cipla reported a consolidated net profit of INR 13.51 billion for the September quarter on a revenue of INR 75.89 billion.  End
