MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has predicted extremely heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Friday. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Bihar the same day, it said.

These weather conditions are mainly because of an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Assam and its neighbourhood. Also, a well-marked low-pressure area, the remnants of severe cyclonic storm "Montha", lies over east Vidarbha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh. This is likely to move towards east Madhya Pradesh and weaken further into a low-pressure area during the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the depression over east-central Arabian Sea remains stationary and is expected to move north-northwestwards across the east-central Arabian Sea during the next 36 hours, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat during this week. Thunderstorms with lightning are likely over Gujarat during the next four days and over Maharashtra during the next two days.

The weather bureau said a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from Monday. Heavy rainfall is likely to continue over east Uttar Pradesh till Friday.  End
