NEW DELHI – The Asian Development Bank has approved a loan of $460 million to modernise rural power infrastructure and provide farmers with solar electricity for irrigation in Maharashtra, the multilateral body said Wednesday. The results-based loan also aims to promote distributed renewable energy generation in the state, the ADB said in a release.
The loan will help the state with its "Power Sector Vision 2030", which seeks to accelerate renewable energy adoption, improve rural energy access, and strengthen the financial sustainability of the power sector. An additional $40-million concessional loan from the Clean Technology Fund, administered by ADB, will complement the programme, the release said.
"The program will solarize agricultural feeders, upgrade rural distribution networks, deploy battery energy storage systems (BESS), and promote green jobs and entrepreneurship—particularly for women," the ADB said. "By 2028, the program aims to provide daytime electricity to at least 900,000 agricultural consumers and reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by over 3 million tons." End
