MUMBAI – The severe cyclonic storm "Montha" over the west-central Bay of Bengal is likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm by early Wednesday and into a depression by noon, Director General of Meteorology M. Mohapatra said Tuesday. According to a video posted by the India Meteorological Department on the social media platform X, heavy showers over Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal are likely to recede over the weekend.

In a separate post on X, the weather bureau said the "landfall process" of the cyclonic storm has commenced and is likely to continue for the next 3–4 hours. The process of a cyclone making landfall signifies its transition from over water to over land, which typically causes it to start weakening because it loses its primary source of moisture and heat.

The severe cyclonic storm "Montha" is expected to move north-northwestwards and cross the coast of Andhra Pradesh between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada in the next 3–4 hours as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90–100 km per hour gusting to 110 km per hour. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the southwest adjoining Bay of Bengal, along and off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha till Wednesday.

Monday, the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm and further into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday. Under the influence of this cyclone, parts of south and east India recorded extremely heavy showers till Tuesday and are likely to receive heavy showers over the next 2-3 days.  End
