--Oil minister: See petroleum pdts consumption at 6 mln bpd in next few qtrs.

HYDERABAD – The consumption of petroleum products in the country is growing rapidly and may touch 6 million barrels per day in the next few quarters from 5.6 million barrels now, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Harideep Singh Puri said Tuesday. India is emerging as a major petroleum refining hub globally, the minister said, speaking at the inaugural event of the 28th Energy Technology Meet organised by Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd.

Puri said India is currently the seventh-largest exporter of petroleum products, sending finished products to over 50 countries, while it is importing crude from 40 countries. While the entire energy sector in India looks promising, the refining sector is one of the more attractive areas.

The energy sector will play a crucial role in achieving India's aim of becoming a $6 trillion-$10 trillion economy. The policy framework and support system at the government level are key to the sector's growth, he said. The minister avoided questions on India's crude oil purchases from Russia and the US sanctions.  End
