Vodafone Idea's fall in mobile users in Sept highest in 8 mos

MUMBAI – Vodafone Idea Ltd. lost the highest number of mobile users in eight months in September, data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India showed. Meanwhile, the other three major telecom operators--Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd., and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.--onboarded new users and this more than offset the subscribers lost by Vodaone Idea. Domestic telecom operators net added 3.41 million mobile users in September, marginally lower than 3.52 million users added in August.
Vodafone Idea net lost over 744,000 users in September, higher than the subscriber loss of 20,000-647,000 users between February and August this year. In January, the company had net lost 1.34 million mobile users.
The new subscribers were led by Reliance Jio Infocomm, which added 3.25 million users in September, substantially higher than the 1.95 million users added by the company in August. Bharti Airtel added 437,717 users in September, a tad lower than the 496,087 users added in August.
While BSNL reported a monthly growth in its subscribers in September, the quantum of additions moderated. Fellow state-run enterprise MTNL continued its trend of losing subscribers last month.
BSNL added 524,014 mobile users in September, lower than the 1.39 million users it added in August. MTNL's subscriber count reduced by 56,928 users in September. This fall was much quicker than the 2,051 users lost in August.
At the end of September, the total mobile subscribers in India stood at 1.17 billion. As of Sept. 30, private sector service providers Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea collectively held 92.10% market share of mobile users while state-owned BSNL and MTNL held 7.90%, according to data. The market shares of Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea were 41.24%, 33.53%, and 17.33%, respectively, as on Sept. 30.
A total of 15.13 million subscribers submitted requests for mobile number portability during September, a tad higher than the 15.05 million in August. The number of active wireless mobile subscribers in September 2025 was 1.09 billion, according to TRAI's peak visitor location register. The register is used to measure active subscribers, including those roaming on a mobile phone operator's network.
