MUMBAI – A deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm in the early hours of Monday, the India Meteorological Department said in a post on social media platform X. The cyclonic storm, titled "Montha," is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm and cause extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh in the next few days, the weather department said.
In the next 12 hours, the cyclone is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards over southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal, the weather department said. Thereafter, it is likely to move northwestwards, then north-northwestwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the first half of Tuesday. Continuing to move further north-northwestwards, it is very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, around Kakinada, in the late hours of Tuesday as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90–100 kilometre per hour, gusting to 110 km per hour, the department said.
As such, the weather department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Andhra Pradesh till Wednesday and over Telangana on Tuesday. Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Odisha on Tuesday and Wednesday and over Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, for which the department has issued a red alert. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
In view of the cyclone, the Andhra Pradesh government has begun evacuation from the areas most likely to be affected, Andhra Pradesh chief minister's office posted on X Sunday. Emergency funds have been released for the 11 affected districts, while eight National Disaster Response Force and nine State Disaster Response Force teams are on standby, the post said.
The weather department has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea off the coasts of southwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, and off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal till Wednesday. The department has also issued a storm surge warning for the coasts of Andhra Pradesh.
