NEW DELHI – India will hold the Bharat International Rice Conference at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Oct. 30-31 to expand its market share in 26 major rice-importing countries and consolidate its position as the world's largest rice exporter and producer. The event, organised by the commerce ministry, the Indian Rice Exporters' Federation, and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, will see participation from trade delegations, foreign ministers from major rice-importing countries, over 2,500 exporters, millers, and allied industries.
The event also aims to unlock INR 1.8 trillion worth of new export opportunities. "We have identified 26 markets, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, where India will target to expand and increase our market share," Prem Garg, president of the Indian Rice Exporters' Federation, said. The event will also facilitate the signing of several memoranda of understanding worth INR 250 billion.
The conference will serve as a global platform for trade, innovation, and sustainability in the rice value chain. India accounts for nearly 30% of global rice exports, having shipped 20.1 million tonnes valued at $12.95 billion in 2024-25. "We want to internationalise our GI (geographical indication) tagged rice varieties and ramp up exports," APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said.
"BRIC 2025 underlines that rice is the backbone of global food security...At the same time, rice is a resource-intensive staple, consuming an estimated 24-30% of global irrigation water," the commerce ministry said in a release. Paddy cultivation also contributes to greenhouse emissions, notably methane from continuously flooded fields. The conference will drive dialogues on sustainability, emission reduction, and innovation in agronomy and irrigation.
State governments, including Telangana, Meghalaya, and Odisha, will display regional rice varieties, with Telangana seeking to promote premium varieties such as Telangana Sona and sign business deals to offload its surplus stocks in international markets. Meghalaya will highlight its indigenous aromatic and black sticky rice varieties.
The event will also showcase how Indian rice varieties can be used to cook international rice dishes, such as Japan's sushi from Mushk Budji rice variety and Saudi Arabia's kabsa from Wayanad Jeerakasala rice variety. End
