MUMBAI – Benchmark indices ended higher for the sixth straight session Thursday. The Nifty 50 crossed the 26000-point barrier for the first time since Sept. 30, 2024, but gave up almost all its gains and ended the session largely flat because of some profit taking at higher levels. Information technology stocks were the top gainers of the day. The sector was among the few that gained driven by optimism regarding an imminent trade deal between India and the US.
Large-cap IT stocks Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra ended 1-4% higher after media reports said India and the US are on the verge of finalising a long-awaited trade deal that could reduce US tariffs on Indian exports to 15-16% from the current 50%. This will provide some relief to the sector, which was among those threatened by tariffs from the US. Reports also said the US plans to curb exports of US software to China as a response to the latter's curbs on rare earth exports. These curbs may be beneficial to Indian IT majors as they might look to become the suppliers of such software instead of the US.
Infosys ended nearly 4% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 50. The company Wednesday said its promoter and promoter group, including founder Narayana Murthy, his wife Sudha Murthy, and co-founder Nandan M. Nilekani, have said they do not intend to participate in the share buyback the company had announced in September. Small-cap IT player Birlasoft rose nearly 8% in what was its biggest single-day gain since May 2021.
Driven by large-cap IT players and other index heavyweights such as Axis Bank and Larsen & Toubro, the Nifty 50 ended at 25891.40 points, up 22.80 points or 0.1%. The index had managed to breach the 26100 level and was around 170 points away from its all-time high of 26277.35 points it had hit in September 2024. More
Textile was another sector that saw the benefits of a potential trade deal between the US and India. A trade deal would lower tariffs on Indian goods and help them compete with manufacturers from Bangladesh and Vietnam. Many of these textile makers have a high exposure to the US market. Vardhman Textiles, K.P.R. Mill, and Welspun Living ended 4-7% higher. Bharat Forge gained nearly 5%, buoyed by likely benefits of a potential India-US trade deal and an INR 27.70-billion order from the Indian Army.
The broader market indices also ended higher, with some of the indices gaining more than the Nifty 50 despite the 50-stock index outperforming these indices for most of the session. Most sectoral indices ended higher. The Nifty IT ended over 2% higher and was the top gainer by a vast margin and was followed by the Nifty Private Bank, Nifty Media, and Nifty FMCG.
Among other stocks, Eternal ended 3% lower, falling for the fifth straight day. The stock was down for the second straight session since it received a goods and services tax demand order from the Uttar Pradesh Deputy Commissioner of State Tax, along with a penalty, aggregating to INR 1.28 billion. Vodafone Idea surged 6?ter a Moneycontrol report said the company is partnering with Indian network equipment makers such as Tejas Networks, HFCL, and HCL Technologies to cut costs, speed up network rollouts, and localise its 4G and 5G infrastructure. This is a strategic shift toward homegrown telecom technology as the company works on a turnaround plan, the report said.
