MUMBAI – The India Meteorology Department has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall over Kerala and coastal Karnataka till Friday on the back of a depression over the Arabian Sea. The depression is likely to move north-northeastwards towards eastcentral Arabian Sea over the next 24 hours.
The weather bureau also issued an orange alert for south interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh for Thursday due to very heavy rainfall. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres.
The depression over the Arabian Sea is also likely to bring heavy showers over parts of the West Coast. The weather department said heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Friday. As the weather system moves north, similar weather conditions are also likely over Gujarat during the weekend.
Meanwhile, the well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal weakened into a low pressure area over north interior Tamil Nadu. The weather system is likely to move west-northwestwards and lie over the southeast Arabian Sea, the weather bureau said.
The upper air cyclonic circulation over the south Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal on Friday. During the subsequent 24 hours, the weather system is likely to intensify further.
These weather systems are likely to bring heavy showers over parts of southern India till Wednesday. Light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm are likely over some places of south India during the same period.
Under the influence of the above weather conditions, the weather department has asked fishermen not to venture into southwest Bay of Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh coasts from Saturday. On the West Coast, it has asked fishermen not to venture into southeast and adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Karnataka, and Kerala coasts till Saturday.
The weather department has also issued wind warnings for the southeast, southwest, and east-central Arabian Sea, with wind speeds reaching 45–55 kilometres per hour and gusting to 65 kilometres per hour till Saturday. Squally winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kilometres per hour and gusting to 60 kilometres per hour are expected over parts of Lakshadweep, Karnataka, Kerala, and south Tamil Nadu coasts till Saturday.
