India receives 13% below normal rainfall at 13.1 mm in week to Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 13.1 millimetres rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 13% below the normal of 15.1 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. From Oct. 1–Oct. 22, the country received 71.5 millimetres rainfall, 17% above the normal of 61.2 millimetres for the fortnight, the data showed.
Of the four homogeneous regions of the country, three regions received below-normal showers while one recorded above-normal rainfall, according to the data. In southern India, rainfall was 79% above normal at 57.9 millimetres, the data showed. Most parts of the region recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall during the week due to the onset of northeast monsoon.
In northwest India, rainfall was 95% below normal at 0.3 millimetres. East and northeast India recorded 1.2 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 95% below normal. Central India received 4.2 millimetres of rainfall, 56% below normal, as per the data.
Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall for the week ended Wednesday was "large excess" in five, "excess" in two, "normal" in two, "deficient" in two, and "large deficient" in 18, according to the data. Seven sub-divisions recorded no rainfall during the week. End
