NEW DELHI – Growth in output of India's eight core industries fell to 3.0% in September because of a decline in the output of coal, crude oil, natural gas, and refinery products, data released Tuesday by the commerce ministry showed. The output of the fertilisers and electricity sector also showed a weak growth in the month.
Core sector growth was 2.4% a year ago and the August print was revised higher to 6.5% from the provisional estimate of 6.3%. On a sequential basis, the index of core industries fell 3.8% in September. In the first half of the current financial year, core sector output grew 2.9%, much lower than 4.3% in the same period a year ago.
Production of four of the eight core industries fell on year in September. The output of coal fell 1.2% on year in September, compared with a 2.6% increase a year ago. Coal sector output had jumped 11.4% on year in August.
Steel sector output grew 14.1% on year in September, faster than 13.6% a month ago and 1.8% in September 2024. Cement sector output rose 5.3% compared with 5.4% in August. Cement sector production had grown 7.6% on year in September 2024.
