RBI adds 200 kg gold in Sept after 2-month pause; reserves at 880.18 tn

MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India added 200 kilograms of gold to its reserves in September, after a pause of two months, with total holding rising to 880.18 tonnes as of Sept. 26, according to the central bank's monthly bulletin released Monday.

 

The RBI's gold reserves were valued at $95.02 billion as of Sept. 26, accounting for 13.5% of its total foreign exchange reserves of $700.24 billion. "...gold prices continued their upward trajectory as demand strengthened for safe-haven assets, underscoring persistent uncertainty," the central bank said. Between March and August, gold prices rose by around 15%, pushing its contribution to core inflation to 117 bps in August, it said.

 

The monthly average price of gold in Mumbai rose to INR 114,032 per 10 grams in August from INR 110,958 per 10 grams in July, and up from INR 82,751 per 10 grams in August 2024, the bulletin said, citing India Bullion and Jewellers Association data.

 

At 2006 IST, the December gold contract on COMEX was at $4,341.6 per ounce, up 3.0% from the previous close. The December contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was up 2.1% at INR 129,672 per 10 grams.  End
