NEW DELHI – Karnataka government has allowed sugar mills in the northern districts adjoining Maharashtra to begin sugarcane crushing activities for the 2025-26 (Oct-Sep) season from Monday, state Agriculture, Sugar, and Sugarcane Development Minister Shivanand Patil said. Typically, mills in the state commence crushing operations on Nov. 1.

"Responding to the farmers' requests, sugar factories in North Karnataka have been permitted to start crushing sugarcane 10 days earlier than November 1, i.e., from October 20, 2025. This will benefit sugarcane growers, as they will have the opportunity to crush sugarcane earlier," Patil said on the social media site X Sunday.

Farmers often prefer an early start to the crushing season to prevent loss of sucrose content and maximise their income, as delayed harvesting can decline sugar yield.

The early start aims to improve sugar recovery, ease pressure on mills, and address farmers' issues, Patil said. The minister has granted permission to start crushing cane in 12 districts – Devanagere, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Bagalkote, Gadag, Yadgir, Uttara Kannada, Ballari, Vijayanagar, and Haveri.

In Maharashtra, a major cane grower, sugar mills have sought to begin crushing by Oct. 15, but heavy rains and waterlogging in several districts have disrupted harvesting operations. In addition, most harvesting labourers are likely to return only after the Diwali holidays.  End
