--IMD issues orange alert for very heavy rain in Tamil Nadu till Thursday
NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of the south till Saturday, owing to the presence of multiple weather systems. The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu till Thursday.
An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres. In Tamil Nadu, farmers are advised to store the harvested produce of groundnut and rice in safer places and drain out the excess water from fields of rice, cotton, and chana, the department said.
These heavy showers are under the influence of a low-pressure area, which is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, the department said. This is likely to intensify into a depression over central parts of the south Bay of Bengal and west-central Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours, it said.
A well-marked low pressure area over southeast Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours, the department said. Under the influence of this, very heavy spells of rainfall are expected over Kerala from Wednesday to Friday, over coastal Karnataka Thursday and Friday, and over south interior Karnataka from Thursday to Saturday.
A trough also runs off Kerala's coast to the southwest Bay of Bengal, owing to which very heavy rainfall is also expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh from Wednesday to Saturday, the department said. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected over these regions during the next five days, the department said.
The weather department has also issued wind warnings for the southeast, southwest, and east-central Arabian Sea, with wind speeds reaching 35–45 kilometres per hour and gusting to 55 kilometres per hour. Similar warnings have been issued for the Comorin area, along and off Kerala, Karnataka, and adjoining southern Tamil Nadu coasts till Friday. Squally winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kilometres per hour and gusting to 60 kilometres per hour are expected over parts of the south and central Arabian Sea on Tuesday, and over the southwest and west-central Arabian Sea on Wednesday and Thursday, the department said.
