India receives 60% below normal rainfall at 0.8 mm Thursday, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 0.8 millimetres of rainfall Thursday, 60% below the normal of 2.1 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. Since Oct. 1, the country has received 59.3 millimetres of rainfall, 23% above normal for the period, data from the weather bureau showed.

 

The southwest monsoon has withdrawn completely from India, a day later than the normal date of Oct. 15, the weather department said Thursday. On Sept. 30, the weather agency, while detailing its outlook for Oct-Dec, had said the overall withdrawal from India may stretch beyond Oct. 12. According to the weather bureau, the southwest monsoon officially ends on Sept. 30.

 

All the four homogeneous regions in the country received below-normal rainfall Thursday. South India recorded 3.2 millimetres of rainfall, 23% below the normal of 4.2 millimetres. Rainfall in northwest India was 100% below normal, with none of the nine subdivisions recording any showers, the data showed. East and northeast India received 94% below normal rainfall at 0.2 millimetres. Rainfall in central India was 70% below normal at 0.5 millimetres.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions, 17 did not record any showers while rainfall was "large excess" in two, "normal" in two, "deficient" in six, and "large deficient" in nine. No sub-division recorded "excess" rainfall Thursday.  End
