MUMBAI – US President Donald Trump said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India will not be buying oil from Russia. "Modi is a great man, he loves Trump. He's assured me there will be no oil purchased from Russia," Trump told reporters during an event at the White House Wednesday.

Trump referred to this as a "big step" and that now Washington will get Beijing to stop purchasing Russian oil. India is one of the top buyers of Russian crude oil, which accounts for over one-third of the country's total oil imports. Russian barrels accounted for over 33% of India's oil import basket in September, Informist had reported on Sept. 30. Russian crude oil had accounted for nearly 37% of India's oil import basket in August, 34% in July, and 45% in June.

Trump said India cannot stop oil purchases from Russia immediately, but it will do so soon. "Within a short period of time, they (India) will not be buying oil from Russia. And they will go back to Russia after the war is over," Trump  said.

These developments come at a time when India and the US are yet to finalise on a trade deal. On Oct. 9, PM Modi had said in a post on X that the two of them reviewed the "good progress" achieved in the much-talked-about trade negotiations between the two countries. "Agreed to stay in close touch (with President Trump) over the coming weeks," he had said.  End
