MUMBAI – Sale of passenger vehicles in India rose 4.4% on year in September to 372,458 units from 356,752 units in the corresponding month of the previous year, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Wednesday. This does not include data from BMW, Mercedes, Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover, and Volvo Auto, SIAM said.

Companies sold a total of 2.16 million units of two-wheelers in September, 6.7% higher than the 2.03 million units sold a year ago. Of these, the scooter despatches rose 9.1% on year to 733,391 units in September and those of motorcycles rose 5.8% to 1.37 million units. On other hand, sales of mopeds fell 2.2% on year to 53,748 units in September.

Despatches of three-wheelers rose 5.5% on year to 84,077 units in September and saw a fall in most of its sub-categories. Sales of goods carriers fell 4.3% on year to 10,442 units and that of electric rickshaws declined 28% to 1,672 units and electric carts fell 51.3% to 306 units. Only the despatches of passenger carriers rose nearly 9% on year to 71,657 units in September. This segment contributes to over 85% of the total three-wheelers sold in September.

The extended festival and wedding season is expected to sustain the growth momentum in the December quarter, reinforcing positive consumer sentiment across all vehicle categories, SIAM said in a press release. The Kharif harvest is expected to be broadly healthy, supported by an above-normal monsoon. However, flooding in parts of the north, west, and eastern regions of India impacted certain crops and logistics temporarily, the automobile body said.

Lower goods and services tax, coupled with earlier rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India and income tax relief announced in the Union Budget are expected to sustain buying interest across all vehicle segments through the festival and post-festival months, SIAM said.

Indian automobile companies produced 3.07 million vehicles in September, up nearly 11% on year. Companies produced 421,405 units of total passenger vehicles, which was over 16% higher than the 363,078 units produced in the corresponding month last year. This was aided by robust growth in output of passenger cars, utility vehicles and vans, SIAM data showed.

The production of three-wheelers in September rose nearly 16% on year to 125,477 units. The rise in production of passenger carriers was largely offset by a fall in production of goods carriers, e-rickshaw, and e-cart, the data showed. The production of scooters, motorcycles and mopeds helped the near 10% increase in production of two-wheelers at 2.53 million units.

Total exports during the month rose nearly 20% on year to 558,768 units. Companies exported 87,762 passenger vehicles, over 30% higher than the September 2024 print. Exports of three-wheelers rose nearly 58% on year to 40,928 units and those of two-wheelers rose over 15% on year to 429,562 units.

JUL-SEPT

Domestic sales of passenger vehicles fell 1.5% on year to 1.04 million units in the September quarter. However, sales in this segment showed signs of recovery in September, aided by recent GST reduction, improved consumer sentiment, and the onset of the festival season, SIAM said. Passenger vehicles posted their highest ever exports in the quarter at 242,000 units, implying a growth of 23% on year.

The two-wheelers segment saw an over 7% growth in its domestic sales during the quarter at 5.56 million units. This growth was supported by higher economic activity, improved affordability, resilient rural mobility demand, and the positive impact of a lower GST rate implemented in late September, SIAM said. This segment also recorded the highest ever exports during the quarter at 1.30 million units, a 25% growth on year.

Three-wheelers posted their highest ever sales of 229,000 units in the quarter, with a nearly 10% growth, driven by the passenger carrier sub-segment. The rise in this segment was driven by factors including increased economic activity for meeting the transportation needs in urban and semi-urban areas, the automobile body said. Easier financing options and a rise in replacement sales have also helped support this growth momentum. This segment clocked the highest number of exports in last six years at 123,000 units during the quarter, up 51% on year.

Companies sold 240,000 units of commercial vehicles in the September quarter, up over 8% on year. The growth was broad-based across segments, with medium and heavy commercial vehicles benefiting from strong freight demand, and light commercial vehicles showing improvement due to robust intra-city logistics requirements, SIAM said. Freight carrying activity increased significantly, reflecting heightened movement of goods across key sectors such as steel, cement, mining, and construction, it said. The recent cut in GST also had a positive spillover on logistics and fleet replacement decisions, it said. Companies exported 24,000 units of commercial vehicles during the quarter, a growth of 22% on year.

APR-SEPT

Domestic automobile companies sold 13.15 million units to dealerships in India in the half year ended September, up nearly 1%. In this period, wholesale sales of commercial vehicles and three-wheelers fared better while that of passenger vehicles declined. Sales to overseas dealerships continued to be robust, with exports during Apr-Sept surging over 24% on year to 3.14 million units.

During Apr-Sept, wholesale sales of passenger vehicles fell a little over 1% to 2.05 million units, mainly dragged down by a near 6% on-year fall in passenger cars. Automobile companies sold 463,502 commercial vehicles during this period, nearly 4% higher than 446,203 units sold during the same period last year. This was primarily due to a 5% on-year increase in sales of light commercial vehicles, which account for 63% sales of total commercial vehicles sold in September. Companies exported 445,884 passenger vehicles during the half year ended September, up over 18% on year, and exported 43,440 commercial vehicles, nearly 23% higher than 35,392 units exported during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, sales of three-wheelers also rose by a good 5.5% on year to 394,450 units. Under three-wheelers, sales of passenger carriers to dealerships rose around 8% to 330,075 units in Apr-Sept, while those of goods carriers rose nearly 2% and those of e-rickshaws declined over 39%. Exports of three-wheelers surged over 43% on year to 219,276 units in Apr-Sept.

Two-wheelers, which account for 78% of total vehicles sold, hardly registered growth during the half year ended September, mainly weighed down by a fall in sales of motorcycles. Indian automobile makers sold 10.24 million two-wheelers, almost 1% higher than 10.16 million units. Sales of motorcycles, which accounted for over 61% of total two-wheelers, fell 2% to 6.27 million units during Apr-Sept. Companies sold 3.72 million scooters in this period, over 6% higher than 3.50 million units sold during the corresponding period last year. Automobile makers sold 2.43 million two-wheelers to overseas dealerships in Apr-Sept, up over 24%.
