IMD: See very heavy rain over parts of Kerala Thursday, Friday

NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu till Friday and over Kerala Thursday and Friday with the northeast monsoon seen setting in over southeast peninsular India in the next 24 hours. This follows the arrival of easterly and northeasterly winds over south peninsular India and central Bay of Bengal, the department said.

Conditions are also favourable for further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from remaining parts of the country in the next 24 hours. Currently, the line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon passes through Karwar and Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Nizamabad in Telangana, Kanker in Chhattisgarh, and Chandbali in Odisha.

The weather department has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala for Thursday and Friday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours is expected. These rains are expected on the back of an upper air cyclonic circulation which lies over south coastal Tamil Nadu and the adjoining Comorin area, the department said.

Another upper air cyclonic circulation currently lies over the southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area, the weather bureau said. Under the influence of this weather system, light to moderate rainfall, coupled with a few spells of heavy rainfall, is expected over most parts of south India till Tuesday, it said.  End
