NEW DELHI – ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. on Tuesday reported a rise in its net profit for the quarter ended September on the back of higher premium income and a rise in income from investments. A reversal in the provisions for diminution in the value of investments also contributed to the increase in net profits.

The insurance company's net profit rose 18% on year to INR 8.20 billion in the September quarter. Sequentially, the net profit increased by nearly 10%. Analysts had estimated ICICI Lombard's net profit at INR 7.41 billion.

Total income of the insurance company rose nearly 13% on year to INR 65.83 billion, led by the increase in net premium earned. The net premium earned rose 12% on year to INR 56.52 billion in the September quarter. This was 10% higher than the June quarter.

Income from investments from both operating and non-operating results added to the net profit in the September quarter. Income from investments as part of the operating results rose 6% on year to INR 8.99 billion in the September quarter and it was up 16% at INR 3.19 billion in the non-operating segment.

A reversal in provision for diminution in value of investments of INR 318 million for the sale of underlying securities also aided the rise in net profit for the September quarter, according to the company's financial results.

Total expenses of ICICI Lombard General Insurance were INR 58.30 billion, up 12% on year and 7% on quarter. The company spent INR 32.78 billion on paying claims, up 5% on year, and INR 10.13 billion on commissions, 20% higher than a year ago.

The solvency ratio was 2.73 times as of Sept. 30 compared with 2.70 times a quarter ago and 2.65 times a year ago. The solvency ratio was also higher than the minimum regulatory requirement of 1.50 times. The incurred claim ratio for ICICI Lombard was 72.1% as on Sept. 30, lower than 73.0% a quarter ago but higher than 71.4% a year ago.

The combined ratio rose to 105.1% as of Sept. 30 against 102.9% a quarter ago and 104.5% a year ago. Combined ratio is a measure of an insurer's underwriting performance, with a ratio below 100% showing underwriting profit.

In Apr-Sept, the insurance posted a net profit of INR 15.67 billion, up 23% on year, on a total operating income of INR 126.66 billion, up 13%. The insurer's gross direct premium income fell 0.5% on year to INR 143.31 billion in Apr-Sept, against the industry growth of 7.3%, it said in a press release. Excluding the impact of the regulation on accounting introduced on Oct. 1 last year, gross direct premium income grew 4.2% for the first half of the financial year against industry growth of 11.3%, the company said.

The general insurer will pay an interim dividend of INR 6.50 per share with a record date of Oct. 23, it said. ICICI Lombard General Insurance's shares ended 1.2% higher at INR 1,854.80 on the National Stock Exchange. The company detailed its results after market hours.  End
