MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Monday said conditions favour further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from remaining parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and northeast India in the next 2-3 days. The monsoon has withdrawn completely from Goa, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. It has further withdrawn from some parts of Karnataka.
The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon currently passes through Karwar and Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Nizamabad in Telangana, Kanker in Chhattisgarh, Keonjhargarh in Odisha, Sagar Island in West Bengal, and Guwahati in Assam.
The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the country had stalled between Sept. 26 and Oct. 10 because of the presence of multiple weather systems that led to rainfall over most parts of India. The declaration of withdrawal depends on fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over a region for at least a few days in succession.
Meanwhile, under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over coastal Andhra Pradesh and its neighbourhood, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh Monday. Heavy rainfall is seen over Telangana Monday and over parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe till Sunday. Similar weather is seen over parts of south interior Karnataka, Yanam, and Rayalaseema till Thursday and over Lakshadweep Friday and Saturday, the department said.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for Palnadu, Guntur, Krishna, NTR, and Eluru districts of Andhra Pradesh Monday. It has also issued an orange alert for Kannur, Idukki, and Kasaragod districts of Kerala.
The department has advised farmers in coastal Andhra Pradesh to provide adequate drainage facilities in fields of rice, maize, pigeon pea, urad, moong, groundnut, turmeric, ginger, and vegetables, and in plantations. In Kerala, it has advised farmers to make provision to drain out excess water from fields of rice and plantations of banana, coconut, arecanut, and black pepper.
Heavy rainfall is also seen over parts of Odisha Monday, the weather bureau said. In east and central India, thunderstorms are likely over parts of Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and Odisha during the week, it said. End
