MUMBAI – Indian equities came slightly off lows towards the end of the session Monday but closed in the red due to fresh trade tensions between the US and China. Over the weekend, the US announced imposition of 100% tariff on goods imported from China starting Nov. 1 or sooner, in addition to 30% duties already levied on the country. This had a negative impact on Asian markets, but all the European indices started the week on a positive note.
"...starting November 1st, 2025 (or sooner, depending on any further actions or changes taken by China), the United States of America will impose a Tariff of 100% on China, over and above any Tariff that they are currently paying," US President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social Saturday. Import duties will also be levied on "any and all critical software" from Nov. 1, he added. This comes after China increased its export controls on rare earth minerals last week, which are vital for the production of several electronic items, semiconductors, auto components, among others.
Indian equities fared better than their Asian peers on reports of progress in US and India trade talks. CNBC-TV18, quoting sources, said both sides are hopeful of concluding the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement by November.
The Nifty 50 closed the session at 25227.35 points, down 58 points or 0.2% but still above the key 25200 level. The BSE Sensex closed at 82327.05 points, down 173.77 points or 0.2%.
Tata Motors was the worst-hit among the Nifty 50 constituents. Its shares ended nearly 3% lower ahead of the record date Tuesday to ascertain the shareholders who would be issued and allotted one share of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd., the demerged company that will house the company's commercial vehicles business, for every one share held in Tata Motors.
Investors sold shares of fast-moving consumer goods and information technology companies. Among the sector indices, the Nifty FMCG and the Nifty Consumer Durables were the worst hit. Hindustan Unilever, Nestle India, and Tata Consumer Products ended 0.9-1.4% lower. The Nifty FMCG ended the session at 54473.85 points, down 492.60 points or 0.9%.
Information technology stocks were weak ahead of the earnings announcement of HCL Technologies. Analysts had expected the movement in these stocks to be volatile with most large-caps detailing their results this week. Shares of Wipro, Infosys, and Tata Consultancy Services closed 0.7-1.4% lower. The Nifty IT index fell 0.8%. It has fallen for the second straight session.
Shares of BSE and some brokerage companies closed higher following media reports that the market regulator is unlikely to change weekly options expiry anytime soon. The Securities and Exchange Board of India is not looking to make any changes to the weekly options expiry immediately unless data shows any "heightened and unusual retail activity," CNBC-TV18 said in a post on social media platform X. Shares of Angel One and Motilal Oswal Financial Services closed up 1.6% and 3.8%, respectively.
Broader market indices closed mixed. The Nifty Smallcap 250 closed 0.3% lower while the Nifty Midcap 50 closed 0.2% higher. India VIX, which tracks volatility and sentiment in the market, surged nearly 9% to over 11.
Investors bought shares of state-owned banks for the third straight session. The Nifty PSU Bank closed 0.2% higher. Indian Bank and Union Bank of India closed 0.9% and 0.4% higher, respectively.
