NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has said that conditions are favourable for the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar in the next 2-3 days. Monsoon is likely to retreat entirely from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and some parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, and Telangana in the next 2-3 days, the weather department said.
The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon now passes through Raxaul in Bihar, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Alibag, Ahilyanagar, and Akola in Maharashtra, the department said.
The retreat of the southwest monsoon from the country has stalled since Sept. 26 owing to the presence of multiple weather systems, which have led to rainfall over most parts of India. The declaration of withdrawal depends on the fulfillment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over a region for at least a few consecutive days.
The department has forecast isolated heavy rainfall to continue over parts of south India during the next 4-5 days. Very heavy rains are likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Saturday, and heavy rains from Sunday through Friday. Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, and Rayalaseema are also likely to have heavy rains till Tuesday.
Amid forecast of heavy rains and strong surface winds, IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into parts of the westcentral Arabian Sea on Saturday. They are also asked to stay away from Kerala and the adjoining sea areas of Karnataka till Monday. End
