MUMBAI – Telecommunication stocks are seen higher in the coming sessions, analyts said, however they will likely mirror the movement in the broader market with the September quarter earnings announcements kicking in next week. The immediate trigger in the sector is the September quarter earnings of telecom majors such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. That said, the earnings dates for these companies are not yet disclosed. The focus will also be on the updates on Vodafone Idea's plea against the additional adjusted gross revenue demand by the government, the hearing of which has been deferred to Monday. To note, telecom was among the major sectors that saw the highest foreign investor outflow during September, with FIIs selling stocks worth $273 million.
This week, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India disclosed user data for the month of August. Telecom operators net added 3.52 million mobile users in August, up more than seven times from the 485,017 users added in July, the data showed. During the month, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., Bharti Airtel, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. onboarded new users, while Vodafone Idea and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. lost subscribers.
On the September quarter earnings front, brokerages expect Bharti Airtel to clock profits and Vodafone India's loss to narrow slightly. "Telecom operators shall witness moderate ARPU (average revenue per user) growth in absence of tariff hikes," Nuvama Institutional Equities said in a research report. "Subscriber addition shall stay positive for Bharti and Jio, whereas VIL (Vodafone Idea) shall continue to lose subscribers."
JM Financial expects Jio's average revenue per user to improve 1.1% on quarter to INR 211 in the September quarter and expects Bharti Airtel's ARPU to likely improve 1.6% sequentially to INR 254. Vodafone Idea's ARPU is seen improving 1.2% on quarter to INR 167, the broking firm said.
"My short-term view on Bharti Airtel is bullish as a strong support base has been formed on charts," Bhavya Shah, technical analyst at StoxBox, said. He expects the stock to face immediate resistance at INR 1,970, following which the resistance is seen between INR 2,007 and INR 2,040. He sees the stock finding support at INR 1,910. On Friday, the stock closed at INR 1,939.90, down 0.1% from the previous close.
"The view on Vodafone Idea is speculative but improving," Shah said. "However, it remains a high risk stock due to its underlying financial challenges." The stock is seen in the range of INR 8.75-INR 9.28. The company's stock closed at INR 9.04 on Friday, up 0.1%.
