--IMD: India Oct 10 rainfall 2.9 mm, 2% above normal

--IMD: India Oct 1-10 rainfall 50.8 mm, 48% above normal

MUMBAI – India received 2.9 millimetres of rainfall on Friday, 2% above the normal of 2.8 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. During Oct. 1–10, the country received 50.8 millimetres of rainfall, 48% above the normal for the period, data from the weather bureau showed.

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, three received below-normal rainfall, while one received significantly above-normal rainfall Friday, despite this week being the last lap of the southwest monsoon. The above-normal rainfall in one of the regions can be attributed to a pause in the retreat of the southwest monsoon from the country since Sept. 26.

The south peninsula received a whopping 106% above normal rainfall at 10.1 millimetres. Six out of the 10 subdivisions in the region received 'large excess' rainfall, with south interior Karnataka receiving 440% above normal rainfall at 24.9 millimetres, according to the department.

On the other hand, northwest India did not get any rainfall Friday, as against the normal of 0.9 millimetres.  Northwest India usually sees dry weather during this time of the year, with the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the region.

East and northeast India received 36% below normal rainfall at 3.3 millimetres Friday, the data showed. Five out of the seven subdivisions in the region recorded 'large deficient' to 'deficient' rainfall. Rainfall in central India was 55% below normal at 1.0 millimetres, the data showed.

Of the 36 subdivisions, rainfall was "large excess" in six, "excess" in one, "normal" in four, "deficient" in four, and "large deficient" in 12. Nine subdivisions did not receive any rainfall on Friday.  End
