MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast that conditions are favourable for the further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, and some parts of Bihar in the next
3–4 days. Monsoon is likely to retreat entirely from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and some parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha and Telangana during the next 3–4 days, the weather department said.
The line of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon now passes through Alibag, Ahilyanagar and Akola in Maharashtra, Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, and Raxaul in Bihar, the department said.
The retreat of the southwest monsoon from the country has stalled since Sept. 26 owing to the presence of multiple weather systems, that led to rainfall over most parts of India. The declaration of withdrawal depends on the fulfilment of certain criteria, which include the absence of rainfall over a region for at least a few consecutive days.
The department has forecast that very heavy rainfall will continue over parts of south India till Saturday. In parts of north Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka very heavy rainfall is expected till Saturday, the department said. In Chikmangluru, Chitradurga, Hassan and Krishnagiri districts of Karnataka, the weather bureau has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall on Friday. It has also issued an orange alert for a few other districts of Karnataka and Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
These rains are expected on the back of an upper air cyclonic circulation which lies over north coastal Tamil Nadu and its neighbourhood areas, the department said. Another circulation lies over coastal Andhra Pradesh and its neighbourhood areas owing to which moderate to heavy rainfall is likely over most parts of the region till Monday, the department said.
The weather bureau has advised farmers in south interior Karnataka to keep the harvested produce of groundnut, maize, pepper, cardamom, turmeric and coffee to dry in covered and ventilated areas. It has also advised to drain out excess water from fields of rice, maize, pigeon pea, soybean, groundnut, vegetable crops and plantations to avoid waterlogging. In Tamil Nadu, it has asked to store the harvested produce of rice and groundnut at safer places.
Meanwhile, under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Bangladesh and adjoining north Bay of Bengal, spells of heavy rainfall are expected over Odisha Saturday, the department said. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kilometers per hour are likely over some parts of east and central India till Sunday, the weather department said.
In northeast India, light to moderate rainfall with a few spells of heavy rainfall are likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till Saturday, the department said. These rains are likely due to an upper air cyclonic circulation that lies over Assam and its neighbourhood areas, the department said. End
