AHMEDABAD - Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports in Apr-Sept rose 5.75% on year to 437.57 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. This was mainly because of the rise in crude oil and petroleum products cargo, which account for nearly one-third of the total cargo handled at all the major ports across country.

 

Crude oil and petroleum products cargoes rose 8.08% on year to 132.55 million tonnes in Apr-Sept. The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, rose 2.25% on year to 17.24 million tonnes.

 

Other than crude oil and other liquid cargo, container traffic increased 10.26% on year in tonnage terms to 104.34 million tonnes. Raw fertiliser cargo rose 11.98% on year to 5.27 million tonnes in Apr-Sept. The volume of finished fertilisers imported in the first half of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) surged 82.58% on year to 5.94 million tonnes. Coking coal volume rose 3.23% on year to 30.49 million tonnes in Apr-Sept and miscellaneous traffic was up 4.40% on year at 54.02 million tonnes.

 

On the other hand, cargo volume of thermal coal fell 1.1% on year to 64.24 million tonnes and the volume of iron ore pellets fell 7.8% on year to 23.48 million tonnes.

 

Among the ports, Paradip Port handled the highest traffic in Apr-Sept at 76.78 million tonnes, followed closely by Deendayal port at 74.37 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 49.63 million tonnes.
